The Serpent's Tooth: A Murder Mystery

Gwen Moore & Pat Britt

When Madelyn Rivers, Curator of Reptiles at the San Pablo Zoo, becomes the prime suspect in the murder of her lover, her friends hurl themselves into the investigation. They soon discover that a number of people--friends, members of the zoo community, and the victim--are not quite what they seem. Set against the background of the zoo, The Serpent's Tooth is the chronicle of the mostly ludicrous, but occasionally surprisingly successful, efforts of a group of amateurs to investigate a savage murder.

Pat and Gwen wrote the first version of The Serpent’s Tooth in 1956. Together, they have worked their way through seven revisions, three agents, two almost-publishers, innumerable writing groups and a lot of fun. Until recently, their other passions—Pat has been a software developer and manager for 60 years (she retired this year at 82), and Gwen had a 20-year career in computers before returning to her music (at 81, she continues to give concerts and teach)—have kept them from finishing Tooth. A shared interest in animals and Africa are evident from a look around their home, although their stable of pets has shrunk considerably from a high of 14 peacocks, 4 dogs, 6 cats, 4 snakes, an iguana, 5 turtles, one parrot, one cockatiel, and 11 love birds to something more maneagable.
